Methods

How do I know which method to use?
If you are sampling under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), you should use 500-series methods for organics and 200-series methods for inorganics. Applications for the SDWA are drinking water systems, delivery point monitoring, receptor and private wells.

If you are sampling under the Clean Water Act (CWA), you should use 600-series methods for organics and 200-series methods for inorganics. Applications for the CWA are discharge permit monitoring, surface water discharges, processed water to any receiving water (including groundwater) and discharges to POTW's.

If you are sampling under Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), you should use 3500-, 3600-, 5000- or 8000-series methods for organics and 3000-, 6000- or 7000-series methods for inorganics. Applications for RCRA are solids, waters and organic wastes associated with disposal or monitoring of disposal sites and waste characterization.

Reporting Limit (RL) and Method Detection Limit (MDL)

What is the difference between Reporting Limit (RL) and Method Detection Limit (MDL)?
The RL is the lowest concentration standard in the calibration range of each compound analyzed. This value is also the low limit for unqualified quantitative data. The MDL is determined via experimentation and verified through additional testing. This value represents the lowest concentration of each compound that can be qualitatively identified by the method in use.
